Bunbuni Trek: Complete 2026 Guide

Published: July 2026 · Reading time: ~16 min · Written by Bhushan, Trekking Cougars

Most people who’ve heard of the Bunbuni Trek heard it wrong. Wrong altitude, wrong distance, sometimes even the wrong mountain. We’re going to fix that here, and give you every real way to actually do it, because Bun Buni Top genuinely does earn the name of this piece: stand there on a clear day and you get an honest 360-degree view of the Parvati Valley that most of the treks around here can only half-deliver.

Offbeat Parvati Valley Guide

Bunbuni Trek: the quiet route above Kalga and Kheerganga

A practical, fact-checked guide to Bun Buni Pass, every usable route variant, the real altitude profile, and how this trail connects with Kheerganga.

What Is the Bunbuni Trek, Actually?

Here’s the honest starting point: search “Bunbuni Trek” and you’ll find conflicting information faster than almost any other trek in the Parvati Valley. Some sites call it “Bun Buni,” others “Buni Buni.” Some cite an altitude around 10,987 ft. Others confidently state 13,800 ft, more than 2,800 feet higher. One listing even describes “Bunbuni” as a waterfall near Kalga rather than a pass at all.

We’ve cross-checked this against multiple independent, detailed trekking accounts, and the well-supported number is 10,987 ft (3,349 m) for Bun Buni Pass itself, also called Bun Buni Top. Three separate detailed sources land on this exact figure independently, which is about as close to confirmed as unregulated trail data gets. As for the inflated 13,800 ft claims: that number matches, almost to the foot, the altitude of Sar Pass, a different and much more famous trek in this same valley. Our own read is that some operators have simply mixed the two up while copying trek stats around. You may also spot one listing describing “Bunbuni” as a waterfall near Kalga rather than a pass. That doesn’t match anything in the detailed, credible accounts of this trek, and it’s most likely a minor, unnamed cascade along the approach trail getting mislabeled, not a separate destination. Bunbuni is the pass.

Every Route Option, Explained

This is the part most blogs skip, because there isn’t just one way to do this trek. Here are the three real variants, so you can actually pick the right one instead of booking blind.

Route Start → End Duration Best For
Out-and-back Kalga → Bun Buni Top → Kalga 2 days Limited time, want the view without the full traverse
Forward traverse Kalga → Bun Buni Pass → Kheerganga 2–3 days Ending at the hot springs as a reward, most popular version
Reverse loop Barshaini → Kheerganga → Bun Buni Pass → Kalga → Barshaini 3 days Returning to your vehicle without backtracking the same trail twice

We run the forward traverse as our standard itinerary, described in full below, since it’s the version that makes the most sense for most trekkers: acclimatise on the way up, cross the pass, then reward your legs with the Kheerganga hot springs on the way down instead of turning around and repeating your own footsteps. If you specifically want the out-and-back or reverse loop, mention it when you book and we’ll adjust.

Why Bunbuni Is Different

  • It’s the trek our own Kheerganga page hints at. We’ve long told Kheerganga trekkers to ask us about “unexplored places” nearby. This is one of them.
  • The 360-degree view is genuinely earned. Bun Buni Top isn’t a marketing name, it’s a real vantage point with a full circle of Parvati Valley peaks around you.
  • Far fewer people know it exists correctly. Given how much conflicting information is out there, a lot of trekkers who might love this route never find accurate information to book it.
  • Genuine Gaddi shepherd meadows along the way, still actively grazed, not maintained for tourists.
  • A natural extension, not a detour. If you’ve already done Kheerganga, this is the obvious next step rather than a completely new trip to plan.

Best Time to Go

May to June and September to October are the reliable windows, consistent with most treks at this altitude in the Parvati Valley. Avoid the monsoon months of July and August, when trails throughout this region turn slippery and landslide risk on approach roads increases. Winter brings snow to the pass itself, which needs proper gear and experience most first-timers won’t have.

How to Reach Kalga / Barshaini

The route in is the same one that gets you to our Kheerganga trek: an overnight Volvo bus to Bhuntar, then a local taxi or bus to Kasol, then onward to Kalga or Barshaini depending on which route variant you’re doing. Flying in, Bhuntar Airport is the nearest, roughly 2 hours by cab from Barshaini. We provide pickup and drop from Kasol, Bhuntar, and Chandigarh on request, the same as we do for Kheerganga.

Altitude Profile (Forward Traverse)

Day-Wise Itinerary (Forward Traverse: Kalga to Kheerganga)

Day 1: Kalga to Bun Buni base camp

Starting from Kalga, a small cafe-dotted village above Kasol popular with backpackers, the trail climbs through forest before opening into meadow country used by Gaddi shepherds for grazing. Expect a full day’s climb toward a camp positioned below Bun Buni Top, setting you up for a shorter push to the pass itself the next morning.

Day 2: Bun Buni Pass, then descend toward Kheerganga

An early start gets you to Bun Buni Top before cloud typically builds later in the day, when the 360-degree view is at its clearest. From the pass, the trail descends toward Kheerganga, dropping through changing terrain as you lose altitude, ending at Parvati Valley’s most famous hot springs for the night.

Day 3: Kheerganga to Barshaini

A straightforward descent of 12–13 km back to Barshaini, following the same trail our regular Kheerganga trekkers use, where transport back to Kasol or Bhuntar is waiting.

Doing the out-and-back instead? Simply reverse Day 2 after reaching Bun Buni Top and return to Kalga the way you came, skipping Kheerganga and Day 3 entirely.

Difficulty & Fitness

Official rating: Moderate. This isn’t a beginner’s first trek the way Kheerganga or Triund can be. The climb to Bun Buni Top involves sustained elevation gain over a full day, and the forward traverse adds a second full day of trekking before you even reach Kheerganga. Come in with some prior trekking experience, or at minimum solid cardiovascular fitness and a few long training walks under your belt.

Do Not Attempt This Trek If:

  • This would be your first trek ever, start with Kheerganga or Triund instead
  • You have a diagnosed cardiac or respiratory condition without medical clearance
  • You cannot currently manage a full day of hiking with a loaded backpack

Cost Breakdown

Bunbuni pricing depends on the exact route variant, group size, transport plan, camping requirement, and whether the trek is run as a direct Kalga out-and-back or a forward traverse ending near Kheerganga. Because the route is offbeat, the most responsible way to quote it is after confirming the current trail condition and support plan.

Cost Head What to Confirm Before Booking
Guide and route support Mandatory for Bun Buni Pass because the trail is less marked than Kheerganga.
Camping and meals Depends on whether the group camps before the pass or returns/descends the same day.
Transport Confirm pickup/drop plan for Kasol, Barshaini, Kalga, or Kheerganga exit.
Permits and local requirements Carry valid ID and confirm current forest/local rules before departure.

Permits

We could not independently confirm a specific forest entry fee or permit requirement unique to the Bunbuni route. This area isn’t an Inner Line Permit zone, and standard ID (Aadhaar for Indian nationals, passport for foreign nationals) should cover registration where required. Confirm current requirements with us directly before booking, rather than trusting a fixed figure here that we haven’t verified.

Common Mistakes First-Timers Make

  1. Booking it as a first trek. Consequence: underestimating the sustained climb to Bun Buni Top. Fix: do Kheerganga or Triund first if you’re new to trekking.
  2. Trusting the wrong altitude figure online. Consequence: packing for the wrong conditions if you’ve read a source citing 13,800 ft instead of the real 10,987 ft. Fix: use the figures on this page, cross-checked across multiple independent sources.
  3. Not clarifying which route variant you’re booking. Consequence: expecting to end at Kheerganga’s hot springs when you’d actually booked the out-and-back. Fix: confirm the exact route with us before you pack.
  4. Underestimating Day 2. Consequence: arriving at Kheerganga exhausted after both the pass and a full descent in one day. Fix: start early and pace the descent, don’t rush it to “make good time.”

A: Bun Buni Pass, also called Bun Buni Top, sits at 10,987 ft (3,349 m), confirmed independently across multiple detailed trekking accounts. Listings citing figures around 13,800 ft appear to be confusing it with the nearby Sar Pass.

Q: Does the Bunbuni Trek connect to Kheerganga?
A: Yes. The most popular variant runs from Kalga over Bun Buni Pass and down to Kheerganga, making it a natural extension if you’ve already done our Kheerganga trek.

Q: Is the Bunbuni Trek good for beginners?
A: No, it’s rated moderate with a full day of sustained climbing. Start with Kheerganga or Triund first if this would be your first trek.

Q: How many days does the Bunbuni Trek take?
A: Two days for the out-and-back from Kalga, or two to three days for the full traverse to or from Kheerganga.

Most of what’s written about Bunbuni online is a little bit wrong. We’d rather give you the honest, slightly messier version, three real routes, one confirmed altitude, and the route decisions that actually matter, than a clean-sounding story that isn’t quite true.
