The Pangarchulla Peak Trek is an exhilarating 6-day adventure in the stunning Garhwal Himalayas, starting from Rishikesh. The journey begins with a scenic 255 km drive to Tugasi base camp, followed by a trek to Gulling and then to Khullara base camp, where trekkers acclimatize amidst breathtaking mountain views. On Day 4, the highlight of the trek occurs as adventurers ascend to Pangarchulla Peak (4,600m), experiencing a challenging climb with stunning vistas of iconic peaks like Chaukhamba and Nanda Devi. The return journey includes retracing steps back to Gulling and then descending to Tugasi before concluding with the drive back to Rishikesh. This trek offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and thrilling challenges for outdoor enthusiasts.

  • Day 1: Drive from Rishikesh to Tugasi base camp distance: 255 km
  • Day 2: Trek from Tugasi to Gulling base camp

Day 1: Drive from Rishikesh to Tugasi (Joshimath)

  • Set off early from Rishikesh to Tugasi Village, a scenic town in the Chamoli district.

  • Enjoy an 8-10 hour drive through picturesque landscapes.

Day 2: Trek from Tugasi Base Camp to Gulling

  • Begin the trek from Tugasi after breakfast.

  • Trek through lush forests and meadows, crossing streams and small rivulets along the way.

  • Reach Gulling, where you’ll set up camp for the night.

  • Enjoy dinner and a peaceful evening surrounded by nature.

Day 3: Trek from Gulling to Khulara Camp Site

  • After breakfast, continue the trek towards the Khulara Camp Site.

  • The trail offers stunning views of snow-capped peaks and alpine meadows.

  • Reach Khulara Camp Site, a beautiful camping site with panoramic vistas.

  • Settle in for the night and enjoy the starlit sky.

Day 4: Trek to Pangarchulla Summit and Back to Khulara

  • Trek Distance: 12 km

  • Trek Duration: 10-12 hours

  • Start trekking to Pangarchulla from Khulara Camp Site at 2 AM after breakfast.

  • Altitude Gain and Loss: From 11,010 ft to 15,069 ft and back to 11,010 ft.

Day 5: Return from Khulara Camp Site to Gulling Base Camp

  • Trek back from Khulara Camp Site to Gulling Base Camp by 3 PM.

  • Overnight stay at Gulling Base Camp.

Day 6: Return from Gulling Camp Site to Tugasi and Drive to Rishikesh

  • Trek back from Gulling Camp Site to Tugasi Base Camp by 11 AM.

  • Drive back from Tugasi (Joshimath) to Rishikesh.

How difficult is the pangarchulla trek?

It is rated as moderate to difficult. The difficulty level depends on the season, weather conditions, and individual fitness levels.

Here’s a breakdown:
Difficulty Level: Moderate to Difficult

  • Moderate: During pre-summer months (April and May), the trail is relatively easier, with some steep ascents but mostly accessible terrain.
  • Difficult: Snow makes the trek more challenging in winter and early spring (December and March), requiring proper gear and experience in snow trekking.
  • Very Difficult: The summit push is steep and demanding, especially with ice and strong winds

Factors Affecting Difficulty

  • Length & Duration—About 38-40 km, taking 5-6 days to complete.
  • Altitude Gain—12,000 ft to 15,069 ft (3,658 m to 4,593 m), which can cause altitude sickness.
  • Terrain—steep ascents, boulder sections, and ridge walks make it physically demanding.
  • Weather Conditions—Can change rapidly, with snow and high winds adding difficulty.
  • Physical Fitness—Requires good stamina, endurance, and prior trekking experience for a smoother experience

  • 3 layers if you’re trekking in spring, summer, and monsoon (1 woolen sweater, 1 fleece, 1 padded jacket)

Personal Medical Kit
Carry these medicines with you, easily accessible at all times. Do not take any medicine unless you have consulted your trek leader.

  • DIAMOX (1 Strip): It is important to carry Diamox as part of the life-saving drugs. On how it reduces the chances of acute mountain sickness on the trek. Dolo 650 (5 tablets): This is a paracetamol. It helps to tackle fever and mild pain
  • AVOMINE (4 tablets): Carry this, especially if you are prone to motion sickness. Pop one half hour before the start of your road journey.
  • COMBIFLAM (5 tablets): Take a Combiflam if you get a sudden twist of the leg or a muscle strain. It is a pain reliever. It also contains paracetamol.
  • DIGENE (4 tablets): Take it if you feel the food that you’ve taken is undigested. Alert your trek leader immediately. It could be a sign of AMS.
  • ORS (6 packs): Consume a pack of ORS water at least once a day, usually mid-day when you are in the middle of your trek. It replenishes essential salts lost while trekking. Tip: It also makes cold water easier to drink.
  • KNEE BRACE (optional): Carry this if you are prone to knee injury or have known issues of knee pain.

Mandatory Documents
These are documents required for legal purposes by Snowhikes and the forest department. Without any of these, you will not be allowed to trek.

  • ORIGINAL AND PHOTOCOPY OF GOV PHOTO IDENTITY CARD: Anything such as a driver’s license, Aadhar Card, or passport will do. This is required by the forest department for your identification.
  • MEDICAL CERTIFICATE (to be filled by a doctor)
  • Note: Please carry the above documents with you. Documents need to be downloaded (PDF), printed, filled in, signed, and handed over to the trek leader at the base camp. Please print these back-to-back on two sheets. Do not print separately and help in reducing paper usage

Cancellation Policy

Cancellation due to Natural Disasters or Unforeseen Circumstances:

Suppose a trek is cancelled at the last minute due to a natural disaster or unforeseeable circumstances (such as floods, earthquakes, landslides, attacks, or bandh). In that case, Trekking Cougars will issue a Trek voucher for the full amount. The voucher can be used for the same or a different trek over the next year.

Client Cancellations:

  • Cancellations made within 30 days of the trek’s start date will receive a full refund.
  • Cancellations made between 30 and 20 days before the trek will receive a 50% refund.
  • There will be no refund for cancellations made less than 20 days before the trek begins.

Please note that all refunds are subject to a 4% cancellation charge to cover processing fees. Additionally, trek insurance is non-refundable.

Trekking Cougars assumes no responsibility for any damage or injury to your clothing, equipment, or other belongings while on the trek. The trek fee covers all expenses associated with the trek, from start to finish, as outlined in the specific trek itinerary.
