BLACK PEAK EXPOSITION

14N 15D

Black Peak, known locally as Kalanag, is the highest peak in the Saraswati mountain range, reaching an impressive altitude of 6,387 meters (20,960 feet). Located in Uttarakhand’s Garhwal Himalayas near Ruinsara Valley, it is a prominent feature of the Bandarpunch massif, which includes other notable peaks such as Bandarpunch I and Hanuman Parvat. The peak derives its name from its summit’s resemblance to a black cobra. Climbing Black Peak is a challenging endeavor, requiring technical skills and experience; climbers face a gradual ascent from the southern side that culminates in a steep summit climb with a near-70-degree incline and a daunting 75-foot ice wall. This makes it an ideal destination for seasoned mountaineers seeking a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. The expedition typically begins at the Sankri base camp and passes through stunning landscapes, including alpine meadows and glacier basins, all while being surrounded by the rich biodiversity of Govind National Park. Black Peak offers not just a physical challenge but also an opportunity to immerse oneself in the breathtaking beauty of the Garhwal Himalayas.

Day 1: Dehradun–Sankri (1906 m.)

Leave from Dehradun’s railway station or bus station (ISBT) for Sankri…

It will take approximately 8-10 hours to complete the journey. The route takes you through some of the most beautiful villages in the region. Sankri is a lovely hamlet that serves as a base camp for a variety of treks. Sankri provides spectacular views of the Himalayan horizon as well as a collection of mountain peaks. Today is a day of rest while you prepare for the expedition that begins tomorrow. You will be given all of the necessary information and specifics about the expedition. Dinner is served, and then it’s time to retire for the night.

Day 2: Sankri–Seema (2560 m.)

The day begins with a gentle path leading to Seema…

Today’s hike takes you through beautiful chestnut, walnut, and willow trees. Along the swift rivulet, we reach the picturesque Seema village after a gradual climb. Set up a campsite for the night when you arrive.

Day 3: Seema–Ruinsara Tal (3350m.)

To get to the holy Ruinsara Lake, walk along a spectacular alpine trail…

. From here, the views of the Swargrohini Range are especially stunning. Ruinsara Tal is related to the Mahabharata, an Indian mythological epic in which the Pandavas were exiled for fourteen years.

Day 4: Ruinsara Taal – Kyarkoti (Base Camp) 3500m

Kyarkoti is a grassy patch of land with boulders around it…

located at the base of a mountain range. On three sides, it is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. It’s an excellent spot for our base camp because of the nearby spring. Porters are the only people who can carry our cargo. From the base camp, you can see Black Peak.

Day 5: Base Camp – Camp 1 (4600m) Load Ferry

We’ll load the ferry and set up camp 1 on this day…

After four hours of trekking from the base camp, you’ll arrive at Camp 1. We’ll trek on grassy land with a gentle downslope before we reach a spring dotted with boulders after crossing a highland near our base camp. We can hit the route that passes through the landslide area after a steep climb. After that, we’ll descend another grassy path that leads to two moraine patches. To get to Camp 1, we’ll have to do some quick bouldering at the end of the trek. Camp 1 will be built on rough grassy land with a gentle westward slope. It is bordered to the north by a ridge. On the other hand, a glacier flowing east to west flanks it.

Day 6: Base Camp – Camp 1

We’ll set up Camp 1 and stay there for the night.

Day 7: Camp 1 – Camp 2 (5100m) Load Ferry

After a three-hour walk from Camp 1…

We’ll set up Camp 2 on a snow plain. From the camp, Black Peak will be visible to the southeast. At a height of 16500 feet, Camp II is situated. We’ll load the ferry and return to Camp 1

Day 8: Camp 1 – Camp 2

We will set up camp 2 and remain there until the next day’s ferry load.

Day 9: Camp 2 – Camp 3 (5500m)

We’ll set up Camp 3 on a big hump of snow with a view of Black Peak…

to the southeast. The camp will be at an elevation of about 18000 feet and will have to be reached by negotiating a variety of crevasses. Swargarohini can be seen to the north, and BanderPunch, a beautiful mountain, can be seen to the south. We’ll remain in Camp 3 and prepare for a summit attempt the next day.

Day 10: Camp 3 – Summit Attempt (6387m)

On the day of the summit attempt, we will begin at 2:00 a.m. We’ll…

Make a rope to help us navigate an almost vertical snow wall. We’ll have to navigate across a few crevasses. The final 100 feet before the summit is the most challenging and dangerous. The snow would be difficult to work with because the slope is extremely steep. Our lead climber will open and close the route during the day as required. Finally, the summit is located on a plateau. It has a flat top. We’ve arrived at the 6,387m summit of Black Peak (Kalanag). We’ll descend safely to Camp 3 and, if possible, Camp 2, after some photography and rest.

Day 11: Extra day reserved for summit attempt.

If the weather does not permit a summit attempt on Day 10, another summit attempt day will be planned.

Day 12: Move to Base camp

We’ll pack up the campsite and return to Base Camp on this day. We’ll have a small party to celebrate the occasion.

Day 13: Base Camp—Seema

The journey to Seema will take 5 hours.

Day 14: Seema – Sankri

We will arrive at the roadhead after a four-hour trek.

Day 15: Sankri – Dehradun

We’ll drive for 8 hours today to get to Dehradun. After that, you can take an overnight train or bus to New Delhi or elsewhere.
