Overview
Black Peak, known locally as Kalanag, is the highest peak in the Saraswati mountain range, reaching an impressive altitude of 6,387 meters (20,960 feet). Located in Uttarakhand’s Garhwal Himalayas near Ruinsara Valley, it is a prominent feature of the Bandarpunch massif, which includes other notable peaks such as Bandarpunch I and Hanuman Parvat. The peak derives its name from its summit’s resemblance to a black cobra.
Climbing Black Peak is a challenging endeavor, requiring technical skills and experience; climbers face a gradual ascent from the southern side that culminates in a steep summit climb with a near-70-degree incline and a daunting 75-foot ice wall. This makes it an ideal destination for seasoned mountaineers seeking a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
The expedition typically begins at the Sankri base camp and passes through stunning landscapes, including alpine meadows and glacier basins, all while being surrounded by the rich biodiversity of Govind National Park. Black Peak offers not just a physical challenge but also an opportunity to immerse oneself in the breathtaking beauty of the Garhwal Himalayas.
